Diseases Then and Now

I found the Wikipedia page about the 2009 flu pandemic. It is a webpage. This source tells where the flu started, how many people where affected, signs of it and treatments for the flu.

In 2009 there was a large flu outbreak. It was the H1N1 strain of the flu. This outbreak started in Veracruz,Mexico. The Mexican government tried to help stop it but eventually places all over the world were suffering from this flu. The total death toll from all around the world was 284,500 people.

This relates to what we are studying in class with the spread of diseases from settlers to Native Americans. The Colombian Exchange brought over diseases like measles, smallpox and the flu. These diseases came from the Europeans domestic animals that had carried diseases that eventually formed into a type that affected humans. These diseases killed lots of Natives helping the Europeans be able to conquer.

Diseases are a large part of our world. They helped shape our world today. We have figured out how to prevent them though an asset that many people did not have in earlier times and currently even. They will always be around and will always be part of our past.

  1. Kristen,
I liked how you connected something we learned recently to something we experienced a few years ago. I had forgotten about the flu outbreak in 2009 and I liked how you brought it back up again. Good job! You response to the Wikepedia page was complete and concise. I had no trouble following what you were saying and learned a lot from your opinion. Great work!
