Slavery Victims Unit

Law and Order: SVU, is a fictional show on NBC that tells the stories of everyday victims of sexually based offenses.  Most episodes feature victims of harsh sex crimes.  Recently, I .
watched season 12, episode 4.  It told the story of a 15-year-old girl that got hit and killed by a car, and the SVU team later figured out that the girl had been a victim of human trafficking.  This episode connects to a modern-day slavery victim, Dalyn, that I learned about in History class.

The young girl, Carly was clearly malnourished, starved, and had recently given birth.  Carly was tricked into being kidnapped, and sold to an organization claiming to be hiring farm hands.  At the organization, Carly was forced to work without receiving money, and unable to ever escape.  She was also forced to perform sexual acts, resulting in her young pregnancy.  When Carly finally freed herself, she was killed in what seemed to be an accident by the owners.

Dalyn, the young Cambodian girl, was also tricked into working at a garment factory, but ended up being sold to a pimp, also unable to escape.  Dalyn was involuntarily forced to perform sexual acts.  Her only escape was a slave freeing organization.

Both stories provide great examples of modern-day slavery, especially those cases including children and prostitution.  These stories work to inform people around the world about the terrible things still going on today, and to provide insight into the horrible lives of innocent children.

  1. I think you did a great job. The connection to what you learned about it in class was very clear. I liked how you picked a specific story of a victim and a specific episode of the show instead of just saying that the overall show relates to slavery. I think maybe you could have added more details about the episode that you were connecting this victim's story to. overall I think your post was well written.

I really liked how you connected this topic of modern day slavery to modern day lifestyle in a new way than others blog style.
