If you are a slave that means you are a person who is the legal
property of another and is forced to obey them. Slaves have been captured or
tricked into doing labor against their will. Slaves have been around for more
than a century, they were forced to do the work that others did not want to do.
They suffered through harsh labor and were discriminated
against because they were different. Many people are still discriminated
against today because of their color, they are handicap, or don’t believe in
the same religion.
In the movie, “Hunchback of Notredame” the point the movie is
trying to get across is that people should not be discriminated for what they
believe in or how they look. The movie takes place on the streets of Paris in
1482, when three gypsies try to sneak into Paris, they are ambushed by guards.
They are unwanted by the Judge Claude Frollo and he sentences them to death.
One of the gypsies tries to flee with her baby,Quasimodo, but is captured and
killed outside of Notre Dame, however Frollo intended on killing her deformed
baby calling it an “unholy demon,” he is sinful and agrees to raise the baby in
the Holy church.
Twenty years
later and Quasimodo has grown into a caring young adult, but is constanly being
told by Frollo that he is a monster and if he steps outside of the Church he
will be discriminated by the townspeople because of his deformed looks.
Quasimodo did not listen to Frollo and stepped outside of the church walls to
attend the Feast of Foods and was humiliated by the crowd and tied onto a
pedestal while people threw things at him. Society didn’t except him because of
his differences which is just like slavery.
Slaves had many disadvantages because they were of a lower status.
Slaves were mistreated or disrespected because they were different and did not
look like the rest. If a slave did not corporate they would be taken to a
square and beaten up in front of bystanders, just like how Quasimodo was tied
up on the pedalstool and had things thrown at him. Being discriminated against
means that you have no say or power, and slaves had just that. Slaves were
being sold and traded liked they were a piece of property sometimes they were
even separated from their loved ones that they will most likely never see
again. Slaves were looked down upon they were worthless, they had a different
skin color which back then told people they were dirty, no good, and stealers.
They were immediately judged because of how they looked and didn’t have the
same rights as the rest of the people.
Both slaves
and Quasimodo have experienced being discriminated and although it was more
prominent in the past discrimination still happens today. Society mistreats and
judges people on their appearance before given a chance. Many people may be
discriminated against their skin color, disability’s, or even their religion.

I really like that you took slavery and broadened the topic to discrimination. It was smart that you took a well known movie that didn't talk about slavery, and related it to slavery.
ReplyDeleteI'm really amused by the fact that you used a very popular movie and related it to your topic of slavery. It makes it easier to understand. Also the first paragraph drew me in quite a bit just by reading the first few words
ReplyDeleteI like how you connected two topics we learned in class not only does it take place during the renaissance but you also connected it to slavery.
