Slavery VS. Of Mice and Men

Slavery is when people are bought and sold as property to do unpaid, forced work. They were captured and held against their will to do labor for others. We have been torturing slaves for many, many years to keep the greedy, selfish people who pay for them from exerting any physical activity. The disadvantaged were harshly discriminated against for insignificant reasons.

The book Of Mice and Men shows that society discriminates against others who are “different.” People of color, mental retardation, and handicap were treated worse than the rest of the ranch workers by receiving lower pay, substandard rooms, and had no respect from their peers. Lennie, Crooks, and Candy were treated poorly because of the way the looked or behaved. Their disadvantages caused them to obtain a lower status in society which led to having unfair circumstances compared to the rest of the workers.

Both in the book and in slavery these “different” people were mistreated. The slaves and characters had experienced discrimination in a variety of ways. Both groups had gotten the short end of every stick. They were given rooms which were not nearly as clean or nice as the rest of the rooms everyone else was given. Although it may be extremely distinct between the treatment of slaves and those who are just discriminated against I assume they would all feel angry, depressed, insecure, resentful, and wishing they were in a society that accepted them.

Those who were slaves had a severe case of discrimination. Unlike Lennie, Crooks, and Candy they weren’t paid nor allowed to stay with the people they love. In the book, Lennie and George (best friends) were able to stay together, but when slaves are sold they will most likely get separated from their family and friends. People who are discriminated against still have many human rights… slaves had none. Slaves were also egularly abused, but the characters from the book were never harmed because of the reason why they were discriminated against. One major difference is that the characters were still treated as human beings, slaves were treated as property.

Slavery was more prominent in the past and it was much harsher than what the characters experienced in the book. However, it still shows how society mistreats people because of superficial reasons that no one has control over. Even today there is still slavery and people still discriminate because of skin color, religion, mental ability, disabilities, etc.

  1. Great Job. I like how you started off by defining what slavery is. When I first read your title I thought how can "Of Mice and Men" relate to slavery, but as I kept reading on it really does relate in many different ways. I also liked how you gave some differences about that characters in the book that doesn't happen to real slaves. Even though the characters in "Of Mice and Men" were never abused they were abused mentally, never coming outside because they are so afraid and they don't know how to be kind to other people. Now I understand how these two different things relate. Good Job!
