The Difficulties of Jamestown

A National Geographic documentary titled "Nightmare in Jamestown" explains a lot about the hardships the Jamestown settlers endured. It tells the story of the first few years at Jamestown and how hard it was to survive. The original reasons for creating the Jamestown colony were for England to catch up to Spain, who had been creating colonies since St. Augustine, and to find lots of gold. The colonists looked for gold to no avail for a couple years, but gave up. Eventually, they sent tobacco back to England instead.

The settlers encountered many problems in Jamestown. The Chesapeake Bay which they settled in had around 13,000 Native Americans, who were a bit different from what the colonists expected. They expected the Native Americans to be nice and give them food and supplies, but instead they fought immediately and were a huge problem to the settlers. Their guns were effective and advanced, but had a few problems, and in some ways were not as good weapons as the Native Americans' bows and arrows. Evidence of turmoil within the settlers was found as well.

The Spanish, who the Jamestown settlers were competing with in a way, had a few spies in the settlement that sent information back. It seems at one point the Spanish had a plan to invade and take over Jamestown, but never attempted to. Many settlers also died because they had little to no fresh water. Drinking too much salt water caused settlers to become sick, crazy, and die.

This connected with a lot of what we had learned in class while I was watching it. Many of the details and facts from another documentary, "Jamestown against all odds", were mentioned. Generally, this source was an extension of the information we went over in class.

Personally, I thought this source was informative and interesting to watch. The way they presented the info through a combination of re-enactments, artifacts from the actual place, and simulations was very effective. It was generally meaningful and intriguing to learn about the topics in this documentary.

  1. Your title caught my attention first, it was simple but it covered what your response was going to be talking about. Sounds like you watched a very interesting show! I think you did a very good job rewording what you learned and how it connected to what we learned in school. I also loved your pictures! They really helped with reading the response. I found myself glancing a few times at the pictures while reading. In conclusion, great job with this response!
