Just Another Supernatural TV Series

A connection I found to class is a new TV series called "Salem". I found out about this show on bostonmagazine.com. The show will be aired on the channel called WGN America.
"Salem" is a new show that takes place in Salem Massachusetts during the 17th century when the witch trials took place. It is WGN America's first scripted tv show to ever air. The big plot twist in the show is that the witches are real, unlike during the real Salem witch trials.
There is a lot of controversy on this new series because of the way it portrays the Salem witch trials. Many say that the show is showing that time period as "sexy and dark". It does not show all of the social issues and shameful times that the people experienced in Salem in the seventeenth century. Overall, the show is entertainment for adults and premiers on WGN America on April 20th, 2014.
Check out the trailer for the show here!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phc6SaxiJ9M
The show "Salem" relates to our history class because we learned about the Salem witch trials. In class we learned that the Salem witch trial did not involve real witches. It was a time where young girls pretended to be controlled and tortured by the devil because of "witches".

These girls then made up a bunch of lies in court. They had fake episodes where they would be getting harassed and hurt by the devil. The girls started the witch trials when they were asked who the witches were that we're working with the devil and doing horrible things to the girls. All they said was names. They would accuse so many innocent people in Salem and the people in charge believed them. The accused citizens were hanged and killed without any proof showing they were witches. finally, when the governor of Massachusetts, Sir William Phips' wife was accused by these young girls, he knew something was very wrong. He soon figured out that the girls had made everything up just to get attention and to have power in their town. In the show "Salem" there will be scenes that include and show these historical events.

Personally, I do not think the show is very meaningful or significant. The show is not made for historical information, it is made for entertainment. I do not think that the writers should have named the show "Salem" because it most likely will not portray the time period how it really happened. "Salem" will be just another supernatural series that people watch for fun just like the thousands of other shows that are aired on TV.

  1. Sarah,
I really liked your blog. Maybe I'll watch the show...It is interesting that they don't even touch on the social issues when they were so relevent then. I agree that there are too many "historic" shows that never tell what actually happened...Great job!

  5. Great job! This was a very interesting post. It's cool how things we learn in history class can connect to real life and you did a great job of showing this. I believe that this show show should include some historically accurate information because people are getting the wrong idea about this time in history. Also, I agree with Julianna that it was a good idea to include the trailer. Great Job!

  6. That was a great blog post! I had decided to read it because of your intriguing title. It was interesting to see how this show is depicting the witch trials differently from how we learned it and the controversy over it. I liked how you included the trailer for the show so readers could understand the show better.

  7. I did enjoy reading this blog post. I'm actually kind of interested in watching this "Witches" show now. I'm interested to see how how people today portray the Salem Which trial of Colonial times. Having a link to the trailer was also a great addition.
