Breaking News!

In the last month or two there have been many sections of the news dedicated to mayors and the drama they have been causing. Recently, the current Lawrence mayor wanted a recount  of the votes because he lost the election and Montral elected a new mayor.

Before current mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre, was voted in when the previous mayor resigned from the office. Mr. Michael Applebaum was the mayor of Montreal for just over a year (Nov. 16, 2012- July 18, 2013). The reason for his resignment was that he was being indicted with many charges, including but not limited to, fraud, bribery, and breach of trust. He took advantage of his position of power and had to change in order to appease everyone.

Mr. Applebaum's situation is very much akin to that of Martin Luther and the Pope during the start of the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther believed that the Pope and the church were taking too much money from the people and going against the laws of the Bible. Martin Luther was upset with this and tried to change it by posting his 95 Theses on the door of the Church to tell them what he thought was wrong with them.

When Martin Luther realized he couldn't change his problems on his own and would need support he decided to form a new kind of religion that followed the laws of tthe Bible more accurately. Of course, the Roman Catholic religion did change, but Luther had already started to gain followers for his new and improved religion.

The city of Montreal and government of Canada believe that Applebaum was working against the laws he was supposed to enforce and was working for his own interests instead of the city's. The people forced Applebaum to resign form his post as mayor and had a trial to determine what his punishment for his harmful actions would be. Unlike The Protestant Reformation, there was a simple resolution and change made to ensure the happiness of the majority of the people involved. The people of Montreal voted in a new mayor and have faith that he will not lead them astray or cheat off of them.
